Moors and Christians |
It was back in 218 BC when Hannibal, together with 90,000 foot-soldiers, 12,000 cavalry and 37 elephants, left Cartagena for the long slog up the coast, over the mountains and away to attack Rome in what would be known as the Second Punic War. Staying in Cartagena, and waving their hankies as the army marched away, were some 20,000 girlfriends, and, as the troops never returned, a small group of extremely happy men found themselves in constant demand.
In fact, the number of comely women so outweigh the number of men in Cartagena, the government has finally built a decent toll-road there to help balance things out.
However, we hear that the descendents of those soldiers are coming back, and no one feels like taking the risk.
