Mojácar once again has a busy summer full of events. Forgetting the Punch and Judy shows, the stand-up comedians and so on, we have the Aljama dance group at 10.00pm on Thursday 2nd August in the Plaza Nueva. Friday 10th through Sunday 12th is the Sopalmo Fiesta. Concert with Isabelle Bes (belle chanson) at 10.30pm on Friday 17th August in the Plaza Nueva. Municipal dance troupes at the Plaza Nueva each evening at 10.00pm from Sunday 19th August through Friday 24th August with, in order, Marcela, Julie, Alexandrine, Rosa Manuela, Fatima Perestrello and, finally, Gustavo Criado. The Mojácar fiestas will be held on August 25th through 28th.
There is a park and ride deal on in Mojácar until Sunday, September 2nd. Leave your car at the new parking lot by the gas station and take the shuttle bus up to the village. The service runs from 6.00pm till midnight and costs one euro (return).

Have you seen the Portrait Artist at Valle del Este? In a far corner of the spacious and extensive lobby of the Hotel Valle del Este near Vera, sits Melanie, commercial artist and illustrator, painting portraits of the guests and residents of this prestigious Almeria golfing resort. For €150 she will paint a portrait (in soft chalks or oil pastels) of you, your partner, special friend or even your pet! This can be 'directamente' from life while you wait or from a photo (either supplied at the time or taken by her in-situ). Some people stay for a while then take a break in the restaurant, pool or spa, or go for a round of golf, leaving Melanie to complete the portrait at her leisure from the photos she has taken. Although having some command of Spanish, Melanie is English, having arrived in Spain from Guildford, Surrey, earlier this year. She has been painting all her life - studying art in Surrey in the UK and also at University in Liverpool in the North West of England where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree. She also paints business premises / buildings (including villas, houses for sale, village scenes and Town Halls) to help promote these premises for publicity, advertising or PR marketing. She donates a percentage of her income from the paintings in this local area to ASPRODALBA, a private, non-profit social association, which fights for the rights, education, treatment, personal development and socio-labour integration of disabled people. "Having a son with special needs myself, I understand the importance of places like Asprodalba," says Melanie, "and Asprodalba is indeed special." UK Internet Petition for owners of ‘illegal’ homes. AUAN Urges Members AND Non-members to Sign-up to Petition. The Almanzora Valley, The Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No (AUAN) Association is urging all members of the Association to register their details on the Spanish Property Scandal Petition (SPSP) web site.
This web site, originating in UK, is collecting details of people who have been caught in the Spanish illegality trap, and intends to present a petition to the Spanish and British Governments, and to the European Parliament.
The web site can be found at www.spanishpropertyscandalpetition.co.uk. It also contains a tab to enter in details of any lawyer felt to have misled/let down a client, which will also be used in support of the petition.
The AUAN is also urging anybody who is not yet a member of the Association, but is in a similar position, ‘owning’ an illegal house, to join the petition. There is a facility on the SPSP web site for a secondary petition. If you are legal, but know the details of a friend/neighbour who is illegal, the details can be added.
A spokesman for the AUAN said, “Despite the promising noises made by the Politicians, following the recent local elections, there is still much work to be done by the AUAN to ensure ALL the illegal houses are ‘regularised’. The AUAN is a legal, registered association and is the only Expats voice in the Almanzora area. If you are ‘illegal’, or even just a sympathiser, join the AUAN, to help the Association’s voice get even stronger”.

A Bullfighting Club is starting up locally, a club for all those interested in the culture of the bullfight. The club will endeavour to bring together like-minded people socially, to organize lunches/dinners, outings to corridas, ganaderias or any other events of interest. Membership will be free and one of the club’s objectives will be to encourage social integration between Spanish and immigrant residents. Another objective will be to dispel some of the misconceptions that exist in some sections of the community have about bullfighting and arrange tutorials for those who want to know more. At this stage we are gathering lists of likeminded people together with their email addresses so that they can be informed of future or forthcoming events. It would be nice if regular meetings could be arranged perhaps on a monthly basis or in the season more regularly. Anyone interested please email Mike Hathaway: myromakeha@telefonica.net.
