From Where I Stand
The white screen, titled ‘From Where I Stand”, blank until this second, this word; is filled with expectation. I am awash with views from where I stand, both physical and mental. Physically I am on the occasionally beautiful, yet neglected Lancashire coast in the North of England, the scenery that greets me during the car journey to and from work fills me with pure delight. A shining ocean, long sandy beaches, Victorian trams and depending on the weather, the Isle of Mann. I love being near the sea and cannot imagine life without it as my companion. I lived in Luxembourg once and despite the incredible wonder of the place, felt stranded; bordered by France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, I was in an ocean-less expanse. I didn’t stay too long. The mental view from here though is clearly centred on Washington. Until recent years, the exploits of the US Government held about as much interest for me as my cat’s meticulous grooming routine holds for my untidy little dog. Now, I actually feel the whole world may be entitled to a say in the next elections held in the US. All decisions made in the White House are like ripples in a world pond, we all feel the force eventually.

When I find myself wandering the aisles (virtual or otherwise) and am at a loss for what to buy you, my thoughts often turn to sex and confectionary. Why? Unsure on that one, though I am sure Freud would have the answer if only he was still around. So this month’s delights involve eating and meshing flesh and sometimes at the same time. This month I would like to dedicate this column to Cindy and the late Casey Sheehan who remain camped outside Mr. Bush’s holiday home as I type. Cindy’s aim is simple, she wants one answer to one simple question from President (?) George W. Bush, “What noble cause did my son die for?” Mr. Bush doesn’t seem too keen to answer this one and I have to wonder why. Surely for a decisive man who roared into Iraq full of conviction, he should be happy to answer this one bereaved mother’s question. September looks set to be as crazy as it gets so let us distract ourselves with some consumerism. Look away from the sad reality and do what no other would want to do, come shopping as I find gifts for Mr. Bush….

Turn off the TV, unplug the phone, pop the dog in kennels and steal some me, me, me time. There you can create your own paradise so you never have to leave and deal with reality again. I may just develop a deliberate case of agoraphobia.

June already, the year is just flying by in a whirlwind of political spin, war fables, torture stories and packs of lies by the droves. Here though, for a moment, join me as we take the weight off our minds and do a little virtual shopping. Good for the mood, good for the economy, good for a diversion and, well, just plain good really as it has nothing to do with bloody minded politicians. Just a quick word before I get out my purse; the G8 conference is to be held in Edinburgh on 2nd July 2005. This meeting of the eight wealthiest nations to decide the future of the poorer countries promises nothing new, so along with many thousands of others, I am popping up there to wear white, encircle the city and hope to be heard.

Election lethargy coupled with indecisiveness in the face of some pretty futile options led me to seek out gadgets that might help. Sadly, political gadgets (is all politics a gadget?) are in short supply; it seems that manufacturers just don’t see voting as fun! I found a couple and then had to abandon the theme to drift into more fertile gadget waters. Happy shopping and here’s to four years of pay back for the votes we cast in the leader’s direction. Ho hum….Christmas is a distant memory, Valentines simply lingers in the air with the scent of decaying red rose buds and there is no joy on the horizon for the avid gift buyer.
